One album that's a sure banger throughout the underground community right now has to be the Blu & Exile album Below the Heavens and it should be. I got the album at the end of last month after all the hype and checked it out. I was expecting some crazy beats and even crazier flows, but when I listened to the album all I heard was this guy who kind of looked like Ludacris spitting on some alright beats with a sh!tload of scratching. My rating would not even have been 3 stars.
I set the album aside and listened to some other stuff and recently I listened to the album again and my opinion flipped completely. Now this lyricist has some flow and the beats are so mellow and chill that I couldn't help but to dim the lights, sit back, and vibe out to them. Blu's flow is amazing and different, I never have heard anything like it and it reminded me of all the hype Mike Jones got when he first came out because of his different flow, even though Mike Jones sucks.
I was familiar with Exile from his album last year, Dirty Science, which had the tracks "Time Has Come" with Slum Village and "Tell You" featuring Blu and Aloe Blacc. I thought the album was bad at first because I was expecting too much but now that I listened to it again with an open mind I would say it is definitely one of the best albums of 2007 by far. I think Blu & Exile and Cunninglyguists had the best album this year as far as underground rap goes. The album is definitely worth checking out and copping. Blu & Exile are putting L.A. back on the map for underground rap and they should definitely keep it up.
